Active Start Sports

Worcester County Recreation and Parks Department is once again launching its popular sport programs for your children to enjoy during the fall season. Active Start Youth Sport Development Programs are for children of all skill levels. These sport-specific programs prepare children for organized sports in a fun, non-threatening environment by teaching the fundamentals of play while encouraging an appreciation for being physically fit and healthy.

Active Start Volleyball will take place at the Worcester County Recreation Center (WCRC) on Tuesdays, September 13 through November 1 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for grades first through third or 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for grades fourth to eighth. Participants will be taught and learn to love playing the sport of volleyball.

Active Start Disc Golf is back this year. This program will allow your child in second to eighth grade the ability to grow and develop their disc golf skills in a fun environment. Participants will play in scrimmage games. The program will be held at WCRC, Mondays, September 12 through October 31 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information on either volleyball or disc golf, contract Trudy Gebhardt at 410-632-2144 x2514 or

            Active Start Dodgeball will be held at Pocomoke Middle School on Fridays, October 7 through November 18 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per child. Participants in grades fourth through eighth will get to play various dodgeball games and perfect their skills of dodging, ducking and diving.

            Active Start Basketball will teach players how to dribble, pass, shoot and more. The program will be held at WCRC on Saturdays from September 10 to November 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Players in grades first through eighth are welcome to register.                         Active Start Baseball will cover all aspects of the game. Participants in grades second through eighth will learn skills and play scrimmage games. The program will meet at WCRC on Wednesdays, September 14 through November 2 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information on baseball, contact Hunter Nelson at 410-632-2144 x2506 or   

            Active Start Tennis will be held at Showell Park on Wednesdays, September 14 to November 2 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This program is open to students in grades kindergarten through fourth. Transportation for all active start programs will be available from the school to the designated park. Excluding Active Start Dodgeball, the price for the listed programs are $35 per child and $30 for each additional child. Financial aid is available to those who show a demonstrated need.
